Speaking Spanish has enhanced my education. I was able to make more meaningful connections with others in class who spoke the same language. Spanish in school was also great because it when people heard me speak it, it started conversations about our identities. However, some teachers believed speaking a language they themselves did not understand while in their presence was rude. I was able to be more of a community member by speaking my HL. For example I was able to go to a nearby Spanish speaking church. I became close with neighbors and workers who speak my HL. I was able to have better connections with family and friends without having to struggle.
