My knowledge of my heritage language has greatly affected my experience in school. Since I am fluent in both English and Spanish, I would help several people in translating services, regardless of them being a student or teacher. In various instance of my school life, I would translate for a transfer student when they needed help or were still learning English. And because the schools I would attend are predominately Hispanic, my heritage language has never caused me problems in school. On the contrary, it has always been helpful to me. Outside of school, my knowledge of my heritage language still serves the same purpose, especially among my parents. Since my parents are not fluent in English, I would be their translator for everything. In the case I don’t know how to translate a certain word, or forget how it translates, I rely on Google Translate to help me. Among my neighborhood, my heritage language was also helpful when people could not understand something and didn’t have somebody who is fluent or has knowledge in both languages.
