My heritage language (Greek) was not commonly spoken (at all) in any of the schools I attended growing up. It has never caused problems in school for me. I found that my Greek vocabulary was useful in some of my science courses and on some standardized exams to help identify root words. I had an English teacher in high school who had us learn Greek and Latin words/prefixes/suffixes and my knowledge of the Greek language posed a slight advantage in this class. Many people in my church community are native Greeks and so growing up, I often heard Greek at church and at events with fellow Greeks/Greek-Americans. Oftentimes the primary language spoken at these events was Greek so at times I could understand and sometimes I could not depending on how quickly people were speaking and whether or not I held the words in my vocabulary/could make connections based on context.
