Polish was my first language and I entered preschool without knowing English. Although I do not remember this now, I’m sure it was difficult at first to learn the language while other kids already knew multiple words. Additionally, because both of my parents were Polish and they did not teach me English much, I sometimes feel that my vocabulary is not as advanced as other English speakers. Numerous times I do not understand certain words while reading or during class. Most of the time, my family and I attend Polish masses at church. Learning Polish helps me to understand what is being said during the mass. Additionally, Polish has been useful to talk to relatives in Poland. While visiting Poland, it was much easier to communicate in Polish rather than English because their English was very limited.
