When I first began school, I did not know English and only Spanish. Some of my teachers did not know Spanish so it made it difficult for me to understand what I was supposed to do. A classmate of mine would help translate what the teacher was saying. My heritage language has been useful when other Spanish speakers need to talk to someone who also speaks Spanish.
