In my personal experience, my heritage language has been helpful. There were a few occasions in which I was able to communicate with those who only spoke Spanish. I was the only one who knew Spanish and I was able to help them. However, there was an instance when I was younger with my grandmother and someone was upset that she was speaking Spanish. I know that should not cause problems, but it did that day.
