For someone that’s bilingual, people often times are curious about the non-American culture and language, so I would get people asking me how to translate this sentence or vocabulary to my heritage language. It was fine at the beginning, but it can get boring very quickly. It caused me to avoid bringing up my heritage language in conversations. Slowly, I have accepted my ethnicity and background, but still avoid unnecessary conversations if possible. The most obvious example would be helping people translate English to Mandarin. Especially, in churches, I went to Chinese churches with my mother before I went into the university. There are times when I step in and help with translating if a native-Mandarin speaker was having trouble or help my mom understand English. It has been a common thing that I do, and I appreciate of doing since it brings happiness to me.
