Yes my heritage language was very helpful in being able to communicate with other Korean friends I have found. I also was able to speak with their parents. It is easier to bond with friends like this as well. Sometimes it can be a barrier in a group of Koreans and there are some who are not. Yes, in church it was very useful. I went to a church where most parents spoke Korean. Also my dad’s English isn’t very good so I have to speak Korean to him.
