My heritage language is Gujarati and it’s been helpful making new friends on campus. Coming from a high school that was less diverse, I decided to join an Indian dance team where most people spoke Gujarati. It helped us bond because we would make jokes in our language and eat food from our culture together. Often times, some of my neighbors will ask me to come help if they need help translating in English. For example, my next door neighbor had an issue with his internet and asked me to call Comcast. I was able to speak in English with Comcast and then translate what they said in Gujarati.
