I became closer to a friend because we had a common language other than English. We started speaking at school in our heritage language several years ago, and it became our “secret code” of sorts, when we wanted to talk about more delicate or private topics. Through our little chats in our heritage language, I also got closer to several of her friends who also spoke our language. As the upperclassman, I ended up encouraging several of them to apply to my university, which one of them ended up going to.
