My heritage language has helped me with my Spanish classes in college because I was able to easily understand and speak the language with ease. As a result of this, I earned relatively good grades in my Spanish class because the material was so easy and familiar. I was also able to answer questions and give presentations with ease. Typically, I’d consider myself to be a bit shy and soft-spoken, but in my Spanish classes I felt really confident speaking up. My neighborhood back at my parents’ home was primarily latino, so I felt like I could speak to anyone with ease. I also felt like everyone knew each other because we are part of one common cultural background. My parents and I grew close to our neighbors because they were latino. At my school, most of the students there were latino, so we all could relate to each other and therefore get along better. There was rarely an instance of bullying or racism, because we were all coming from the same background.
