It was helpful in my High School because most of the people in my school were of South Asian descent. We were able to joke and relate to each other, making friendships easy. Outside of school, in my mosque, it was easy to understand speakers if they used Urdu slightly in their lectures. In my neighborhood, which is majority South Asian, I was able to understand and communicate with some of my neighbors if I ever encountered them. At the same time, using it in public would bring strange stares from Americans who were not bilingual.
