I never really used my heritage language in Hindi. I learned Hindi + English almost concurrently. Growing up my Hindi was better, but by the time I was in school I was fluent in English as well. Never helpful either because I first went to school in Europe and then the USA. Have grown up in some heavily Indian areas so it is has helped. It is useful to talk to older people in the community. Also helpful when going back to India. Can talk to older relatives and just random people.
